In my international school classroom in Taiwan, I’ve seen how something as simple as co-annotating a primary source can spark critical thinking. Academy One of the most powerful ways I’ve seen Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) come alive in online & blended classrooms is through Kahoot! Academy’s SEL collections, developed with partners like Empatico, Peppy Pals, & Peekapak. These interactive games give students more than just a quiz experience; they provide opportunities to practice empathy, self-management, and relationship-building in a safe, engaging way. In my context, teaching social studies both in the Ottawa Catholic School Board & at an international school in Taiwan, SEL is not an “extra.” It is the glue that makes academic content meaningful and accessible for all students. For the slide deck, I’d keep it really simple at first with just an intro slide to welcome students & set the tone, then a consolidation slide at the end where we wrap up the key ideas. Over time I’d build on that template to create a consistent online environment so students always know what to expect. 2. I’ve seen teachers make their backgrounds fun & personal, like adding plants, lights, or even posters that show off their interests. Bitmoji classrooms are also really popular, but I like how some teachers also create interactive slides where students can click around like they’re actually moving through a space. 3. At the Ottawa Catholic School Board the main platform for course delivery is Brightspace, but I’ve also seen a lot of teachers mixing in Google Classroom since it’s so familiar & easy for students. I also used Hapara. 2. A simple start-up guide I like sharing is the Google Classroom one that walks new users through creating a class, adding students & posting assignments. It’s super visual & really easy to follow. 3. The big difference between an LMS & a meeting tool is that an LMS (like Brightspace) holds all the content, assignments & discussions over time, while a meeting tool (like Zoom or Teams) is mainly for the live interactions. 4. A good schedule can really support SEL because it gives students consistency & balance.
