Synchronous Online Learning Guides, Programs and Tools

1. At the Ottawa Catholic School Board the main platform for course delivery is Brightspace, but I’ve also seen a lot of teachers mixing in Google Classroom since it’s so familiar & easy for students. I also used Hapara.
2. A simple start-up guide I like sharing is the Google Classroom one that walks new users through creating a class, adding students & posting assignments. It’s super visual & really easy to follow.
3. The big difference between an LMS & a meeting tool is that an LMS (like Brightspace) holds all the content, assignments & discussions over time, while a meeting tool (like Zoom or Teams) is mainly for the live interactions.
4. A good schedule can really support SEL because it gives students consistency & balance. It makes room for breaks, group work & reflection so kids don’t just feel like they’re staring at screens nonstop.
5. Besides the ones listed, I’ve also used Webex & even Discord in a pinch. Every tool has its quirks, but once you get the hang of them, they can all help keep learners connected.
