Building SEL Through Playful Learning with Kahoot! Academy

One of the most powerful ways I’ve seen Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) come alive in online & blended classrooms is through Kahoot! Academy’s SEL collections, developed with partners like Empatico, Peppy Pals, & Peekapak. These interactive games give students more than just a quiz experience; they provide opportunities to practice empathy, self-management, and relationship-building in a safe, engaging way.

In my context, teaching social studies both in the Ottawa Catholic School Board & at an international school in Taiwan, SEL is not an “extra.” It is the glue that makes academic content meaningful and accessible for all students. By integrating Kahoot SEL activities, my students get to explore perspective-taking, respectful communication, & cultural awareness while still having fun. For example, Empatico’s activities connect kids across borders, while Peppy Pals helps younger learners navigate feelings through storytelling and humor.

This is also a practical step toward aligning with Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) Standards of Practice. The OCT standards emphasize care respect, & equity, & SEL focused tools give us tangible ways to meet those expectations. At the same time, embedding these practices online supports both digital citizenship and equitable access in our e-learning environments.

If you’re looking to deepen SEL in your classroom, whether face-to-face or online, try adding one of the Kahoot SEL modules to your weekly routine. It’s a small shift, but it opens the door for students to grow not only as learners, but as compassionate individuals ready to thrive in a global community.

One of the most exciting shifts I’ve noticed in e-learning is how playful tools can make serious learning stick, especially when it comes to Social-Emotional Learning (SEL). Kahoot! Academy’s SEL collections, built with partners like Empatico, Peppy Pals, and Peekapak, are a great example. These games aren’t just about answering questions quickly; they build self-awareness, empathy, and decision-making skills in ways that connect directly to Ontario’s curriculum and OCT standards of care, respect, & equity.

In my own practice, whether I’m teaching social studies with the Ottawa Catholic School Board or working with international students in Taiwan, SEL isn’t an add-on. It’s embedded in every lesson. Tools like Empatico help my students connect across borders & practice perspective-taking, while Peppy Pals’ storytelling lets younger learners explore emotions in a safe way. Peekapak integrates literacy with SEL, which means I can build critical thinking & communication skills at the same time.

At the same time, I’ve been reflecting on the environmental sustainability piece of e-learning. Our updated OCSB Guiding Principles chart calls us to design classrooms that model eco-responsibility. This means minimizing printing, using cloud platforms, & creating activities like digital carbon footprint calculators. Pairing SEL with sustainability works beautifully: students learn that their choices, whether in relationships, online behavior, or environmental action, carry real impact.

Bringing SEL & sustainability together online also deepens culturally responsive teaching. When students from different backgrounds share their perspectives in collaborative tools like Jamboard or Kahoot discussions, they aren’t just learning content. They’re building respect for diversity, connecting their identities to global issues, & seeing themselves as agents of change.

For me, that’s the heart of e-learning done right: pedagogy first, tech second. When we use playful platforms like Kahoot with purpose, we’re not only supporting academic goals but also preparing students to thrive in a world that demands empathy, resilience, & responsibility.
