SEL and Wellness in an eLearning Classroom:
A Literature Review Overview: Student well-being is foundational to success in eLearning.
Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) provides the framework to promote identity, resilience, and healthy relationships in online spaces. Research from CASEL (2025) & Ontario Ministry of Education resources highlight the importance of fostering self-awareness, relationship skills, & responsible decision-making in digital contexts.
Key Components
1. SEL Competencies in Online Learning
Self-Awareness: Reflective journaling, online self-assessments
Self-Management: Goal-setting with digital trackers, mindfulness breaks
Social Awareness: Cross-cultural projects, empathy-building discussions
Relationship Skills: Collaborative breakout rooms, peer mentoring online
Responsible Decision-Making: Problem-based learning tied to ethical digital dilemmas
2. Wellness Practices in eLearning
Balance: Structured screen breaks & outdoor activity prompts
Belonging: Icebreaker activities and consistent teacher presence
Support Systems: Access to digital guidance counsellors or wellness check-ins
3. Technology Tools
Mindfulness Apps: (e.g., Smiling Mind, Headspace)
Collaborative Platforms: (Google Workspace, Padlet, Jamboard) to foster relationships
Learning Portals: Ontario’s Digital Citizenship Hub
Equity & Inclusion-Lens Access: Design both high-tech & low-tech wellness activities to bridge the digital divide
Diversity: Embed First Nations, MΓ©tis, and Inuit perspectives & culturally responsive practices into digital SEL
Global Context: Recognize that wellness strategies may look different across international schools (Taiwan vs Ontario)
Pedagogical Implications:
Critical Reflection: Teachers model vulnerability by reflecting on their own well-being practices
Narrative Inquiry: Invite student stories of resilience during online learning
Pedagogical Leadership: Share SEL routines with colleagues to build school-wide wellness culture
Next Steps for Educators:
Build a SEL & Wellness Wakelet Collection of resources, Co-create wellness routines with students e.g., virtual gratitude walls, continue to align with OCT standards of Care, Trust, & Respect while leveraging ISTE & ECOO resources for digital wellness.
All the best.
Mike
